We who with songs beguile your pilgrimage / And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die, / We Poets of the proud old lineage / Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why ... (James Elroy Flecker)

Keeping Watch

Keeping Watch

In the hushed solitude of late night –
communing with moonlight and owl,
drifting clouds, oceans of stars –
I gaze down through the pane
at our little street
in its calm, still,
slumbering,
silent
dark.

A nonet for Fussy Little Forms at 'imaginary garden with real toads'.

  1. Love your imagery, Rosemary. I know that scene quite well, early in the pre-dawn. Calm, still, slumbering, silent.

  2. "still,/slumbering,/silent/dark": Ah, this alliteration produces a perfect closing.
The silence and the solitude are felt in your words. Beautifully done, Rosemary. :-)

  5. I'm never there for the night, but I do love how you capture that place... maybe we need a lonely place like that sometimes.
