We who with songs beguile your pilgrimage / And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die, / We Poets of the proud old lineage / Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why ... (James Elroy Flecker)

Journeying

I dream of travelling again by train,

to watch the countryside flow idly by

and change from day to night, from sun to rain:

expansive forests, rivers, changing sky

in slow procession past my window – I,

according to the mood and hour, to rest

or read a while, eat lunch, or watch the best

the landscape offers, and at length the sea

across a little distance; then at last

arrival … and reunion, you and me!

A dizain for dVerse.

  3. A train journey is such a civilised way to travel, Rosemary, we travelled across Australia from Perth to Melbourne in 1968, when that journey consisted of four different gauges and railways... Well captured!

    1. It is indeed my favourite way to travel. Yet most of my journeys in Australia, and elsewhere, have been by car or plane.

  4. I love travelling by train... but alas so many trainlines have been lacking any service and are now coming apart when we need them the most.

  5. I find this poem beautiful and deep.
We are all traveling on a metaphorical train, passing through various stages of life—some eye-opening, some tear-flowing, and some breathtaking. It’s best to embrace the journey until we reach our destination and the reunion takes place.

    1. Thank you! I'm so glad you picked up on the metaphor. I deliberately didn't emphasise it at all, but it is there intentionally.
