We who with songs beguile your pilgrimage / And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die, / We Poets of the proud old lineage / Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why ... (James Elroy Flecker)

Multiple Love Protestation

I, who’ve loved several, always love true.

My heart, engaged, does not waver nor fail.

It simply grows larger, to hold you all.

It may be different, or the same, for you.

(But there, I know yours might be the equal.)

I, who’ve loved several, always love true:

my heart, engaged, does not waver nor fail.

So – you and you and you and you and you

I love eternally, and very well.

I promise I am faithful – to you all.

I, who’ve loved several, always love true.

My heart, engaged, does not waver nor fail.

It simply grows larger, to hold you all.

It was written for dVerse Meeting the Bar, Thursday 13 Nov 2025:  The Roundel ~ Circling back the Chaucerian Way.  However, I was busy with several days of extended 86th birthday celebrations, and didn't get this written until it was too late to be included. So I'll share it at their next Open Link Night instead.

Although I like to play with form, I do believe this is my first roundel – certainly my first Chaucerian one (as distinct from the much later Swinburnian version).
