We who with songs beguile your pilgrimage / And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die, / We Poets of the proud old lineage / Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why ... (James Elroy Flecker)

Slumbering Summer

Slumbering Summer

Red geraniums grow tall.
Their leaves, like hands,
tap softly against my window

~ in the somnolent mid-afternoon ~

when the sun gets warmer,
I start to drowse, and
my tall geraniums also nod.

A puente for 'imaginary garden with real toads'.

  2. This is a perfect read for me right now--it's really cold here. The picture of a garden and gardener close to daydreaming in the warmth is quite soothing.

  3. You’ve captured a wonderfully drowsy moment in your Puente, Rosemary, and I can picture those red geraniums! I prefer red geraniums to any other colour and like their scent, which reminds me of hot summer afternoons.

  7. I'm so glad everyone likes it. I was in two minds whether to post it, as I thought it was kind of a nothing poem that would be of little interest to anyone. Just proves all over again that we aren't always the best judges of our own work!

  8. Love the nodding geraniums and the poet. Geraniums smell so wonderful. I have one that I brought in from outside and it is growing nicely and smiling at the snow blasting outside. Such a gentle and soothing mood in this Rosemary.

  12. As I write this, Toronto's temperature hovers about 0 C, and dreaming of the flowers that I helped my dad plant, so long ago, in the beds surrounding the house. Of the hummingbirds and other pollinators, would brought forth the beauty of these plants to life. Thank you, Rosemary, for bringing back this precious memory of my dad and I.

    1. Red geraniums also connect me to the memory of my dad, who grew them and other flowers in the beds around our house when I was a child. He was very fond of them, and taught me to love them too. I always make sure I have geraniums growing wherever I live. (Luckily they are hardy and will grow anywhere.)

  14. My aunt grew red geraniums in a pot outside her window. This poem is so comforting, I want to curl up with it.

  15. Nap time, the flowers will wait, take their naps while waiting. Your transfer line set the stage for that nicely.

    1. Um, well, no ... unless you are seeing the geraniums as God's work of art.
