On hot days, it's evening
when I open both doors. Cool air
floats inside, soothing my skin.
On days of rain and thunder,
bedtime’s best: I snuggle
indoors, warm and safe.
On busy days, the best time
is after dinner. I shrug off
duties, responsibilities; relax.
On lazy, self-indulgent days,
restored, I come alive at night
to dream or plan … in the nurturing dark.
Written for Poets and Storytellers United in response to Friday Writings #211: Write about the time of day you like best, and why. I have written a number of times already about my preference for the night hours, so I thought I'd look at the question differently. However ...

DeleteNice take on the prompt, Rosemary. 👏
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI love that there are favourite types of day for both the external weather and internal feeling it passes on! Jae
ReplyDeleteThank you for this acute comment.
DeleteI feel those times too. I like dusk when the sun is low and the light paints a mystical glow.
ReplyDeleteLovely! A poetic comment.
DeleteIt's complicated. Your words remind me that time is not an island and that what feels best depends on circumstances. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is indeed part of what I hoped to convey.
DeleteEvery season with its comforts
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteIt all depends upon the KIND of day, doesn't it? Fine respond to a cool prompt. Thanks
ReplyDeleteTo some extent, certainly.
DeleteGood use of your time, I reckon.
ReplyDeleteInteresting comment, implying it's not so much the time as the way one uses it. Thank you.
Deletea gentle reminder that both time or place are transparent as clear water ... it takes the colour and the shape of the people around.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully understood and sweetly expressed.
DeleteDifferent times for different purposes makes sense. I like "bedtime's best" (the alliteration, anyway).
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI appreciate all the kind comments – but I see I must learn to handle irony with rather more clarity! I did try to drop a hint in the notes, but evidently was unsuccessful. In fact these were all about the same time: night-time (evening, bedtime, after dinner, night, in the ... dark) and therefore not really different from my usual response to the question.
ReplyDeleteHi down there! Enjoying your summer? We're in the midst of an unusually bitter cold snap so Im dreaming of my favorite time. Late afternoon when the storm clouds build and billow on the horizon and thunder echos across the fields. The approach of a good 'ol thunderstorm makes me feel most alive.
ReplyDeleteI think many of us love thunderstorms. (Ha ha, here they most often happen at – wait for it – night.) I'm not sure 'enjoying' is quite the right word for this summer, with 'extreme heat' or 'severe heat' warnings every day. So far I've managed to keep myself and my little cat fairly comfortable.
DeleteA person who flourishes in the night...A lot of us are like that It is the nature of the beast (poets:)
ReplyDeleteoops it's me...Rall!
ReplyDeleteYou must be right. Most of the poems in response to this prompt bear it out.
DeletePretty bedtime pleasure. Even a waking thunder storm like we had last night. Your poem begs for more.
ReplyDeleteIt could use some improvement that's for sure! But I think it's better discarded.
Deletethats cool....there's something to enjoy no matter what type of day it is...

DeleteYou have the perfect time for days of rain and thunder.
ReplyDeleteYes, we have been having one or two days of those, but mostly it's an extreme heatwave these recent weeks.
